Jewish Town

Avoid this quarter on Saturdays, because of the Sabbath on this day. There has been a Jewish community in Prague since the 12th century. From the 13th to the 16th century the community developed under a better organization. From the 1540´ies many restrictions were laid upon the Jews and in 1744 the Jews were displaced by the Bohemian queen Maria Theresa. The ghetto itself has been destroyed by fires two times In the last century the ghetto was destroyed and Art Nouveau buildings were build. Only 10 % of the Bohemian Jews survived the second World War ( about 10.000 people)

The Old Cemetery

This is the oldest cemetery in the Europe, dating back as far as the 13th century. This was the only cemetery for Jews until 1787,as funerals were banned in the center of town. Nobody knows exactly how many peoples lie buried here, but the history books say 20.000 people in 12 layers, as a grave is permanent once it has been established according to Jewish beiefs The most known person buried here is Rabbi Judah Low been Bezalel, whom died in the year 1609, other mean 1613. Rabbi Low worked for 36 years as a headmaster of the Talmudic school and later as a master Rabbi. He published more than 50 religious and philosophical books.

The Old New Synagogue

Dates back to the middle of the13th century, which means that this is the oldest synagogue in Central Europe, the gates themselves are the oldest in Prague. The early Gothic style gives you an idea of how many of the buildings once looked like. There are many legends about this building. One of them says, that angels came with the stones, from which the church is built and that the angels have protected it ever since ( the church has avoided to big fires). The synagogue was renovated in the 19th century and is used for religious services. Notice the separation of men and woman. During the service the church itself is reserved for the men, while the women must follow through small windows in the wall. The synagogue is still in use.
